GENERAL EVENT

THE DANGEROUS WORLD OF KIM JONG UN: ANNA FIFIELD

SUNDAY 17 MAY – 10.00-11.00AM

HUNUA ROOM, AOTEA CENTRE

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is a cartoonish figure, inspiring fear as well as ridicule. He is swathed in myth and propaganda, from the claim that aged three he could fire a gun and hit a lightbulb from 100 metres, to the stories of having his [perceived] rivals killed. In her critically acclaimed book, The Great Successor: The Divinely Perfect Destiny of Brilliant Comrade Kim Jong Un, Anna Fifield argues that viewing Kim as a mere caricature underestimates his threat to those inside and outside "The Hermit Kingdom". Drawing on reporting across eight countries and interviews with those close to him, she reveals Kim as a ruthless rationalist. Fifield is The Washington Post’s Beijing bureau chief and the 2018 winner of Stanford University’s Shorenstein Journalism Award for outstanding reporting on critical issues affecting Asia. In conversation with Simon Wilson.
