54. THE END MATTERS: ATUL GAWANDE

SATURDAY MAY 16 – 6.00-7.00PM

ASB THEATRE, AOTEA CENTRE

Atul Gawande writes profoundly about medicine. He’s a surgeon, author, researcher (with a particular interest in patient safety and care) and staff writer for The New Yorker. Being Mortal is his fourth book, and in it he wrestles as a clinician and as a son with dilemmas concerning end-of-life care. In conversation with Middlemore Hospital ICU specialist David Galler, Gawande will prompt us to rethink our relationship with medicine, during our life and, most crucially, at its close. Supported by Summerset.

77. WAYS TO CHANGE THE WORLD

SUNDAY MAY 17 – 3.00-4.00PM

ASB THEATRE, AOTEA CENTRE

What does the world look like in 2015? What have we got right? What have we done wrong? And what can we do about any of it anyway? Four eminent Festival guests calibrate the state of play and give their forecasts as well as their preferred courses of action. Join UK scientist Philip Ball, US surgeon Atul Gawande, NZ novelist Charlotte Grimshaw, and Chinese journalist Xinran in a thought-provoking rumination.  Chaired by Jesse Mulligan.
