Los Yonic's In Concert
Los Yonic's formed in the 1970s in the small town of San Luis San Pedro, Guerrero, Mexico, and soon began crafting synth-laden regional Mexican ballads that take on wildly romantic pop forms known as "la onda grupera."
As the grupera explosion began to skyrocket in the late ‘70s and ‘80s, these musical poets relocated to the beach city of Acapulco and continued building their prolific repertoire. To date, the band boasts nearly 30 full-length albums. Their music is a blend of soft tropical pop and norteña rhythms, plus a hint of rock as they incorporate electric guitars, keyboards, brass, and wind instruments.
Although Los Yonic's have undergone numerous lineup changes since their inception, founder and multi-instrumentalist Johnny Ayvar has continued to be a driving force, with José Manuel Zamacona taking vocal leads. They are widely considered pioneers of grupera, and have inspired legions of bands along the way, including Los Bukis, Los Temerarios, and Los Caminantes.
At the turn of the millennium, Los Yonic's discovered a massive following within the immigrant community of the U.S., and along both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. Through their nonstop album productions, they've continued to remain regular chart-topping fixtures of the Billboard regional Mexican category. Today, José Manuel Zamacona Jr. takes the lead as musical director, while providing backup vocals and guitar duties.
