NHL® All-Star Game
For the first time since 1997, the NHL® All-Star Game returns to the city of San Jose, California, as part of the NHL® All-Star Weekend from January 24 to 27, 2019. The SAP Center, commonly referred to as the "Shark Tank" after the hometown Sharks, is a 17,496-capacity facility accessible via public transportation (CalTrain, VTA, and ACE) to the Diridon Station. Before establishing the new 3-on-3 tournament format, the NHL® All-Star Game had been an Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference battle, a matchup of All-Stars from North America pitted against All-Stars from other parts of the world as well as a fantasy league–like player draft by designated captains. But the excitement of the 3-on-3 inter-division tournament, with fans voting for the four team captains, is uncompromised. The NHL All-Star Skills Competition takes place on Friday, January 25, and the 2019 NHL Fan Fair™ — where fans can take a picture with the Stanley Cup, meet the NHL mascots, and play games — is open all weekend at the adjacent four-day festivities at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center.
The NHL® All-Star Game 3-on-3 tournament might very well be the most exciting hockey game you've ever seen. Each of the league's four divisions (Metropolitan, Pacific, Atlantic, Central) fields an 11-man roster consisting of six forwards, three defensemen, and two goaltenders — all the best of the best. Two 20-minute single-elimination games are played followed by the All-Star Tournament Final between the two victors, with the winning division splitting a $1 million prize. Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby dishing the puck to Washington's goals leader Alexander Ovechkin for a game-winning score? Edmonton's Connor McDavid connecting with Los Angeles' Drew Doughty for a 100 mph slap shot that gets blocked acrobatically by Nashville goaltender Pekka Rinne? These are the types of star-studded moments that can be real only in the NHL® All-Star Game. "Ovie," "Sid the Kid," and the Metropolitan Division will look to defend their title after knocking out Calgary's Johnny Gaudreau, San Jose's Joe Pavelski, and the Pacific Division squad in the 2018 Final. And while the All-Star Game has historically been played on a Sunday, this year's game is on a Saturday at San Jose's SAP Center. Tickets are now officially on sale.
